Springtime in Virginia is fast approaching, thank goodness. I, personally, am ready for sunshine, sweet smelling flowers and freshly cut grass enhancing my smell of our new season quickly approaching. It reminds me of Mom and her love of garage/yard sales !
Mom would get so excited when I picked her up and told her we were going to yard sales, garage sales and any stop along the way that resembled a sale of any kind. Mom used to have beautiful antiques and she had grown quite proficient at eyeing something of value. When we went to these sales, it was amazing to observe the transformation in her. She became focused and excited. Any sign of Alzheimer’s would be tucked away, if only for a few minutes. The human brain is remarkable. Mom actually got a refreshing break from her disease when we spent the day together at yard/garage sales.
I would be by her side as she ventured from table to table…..gingerly picking up small vases, glassware, knick-knacks and anything else that she felt was interesting. She would haggle with the owner over the price as she did many years ago. She would ask questions on it’s origin and date. If she thought the price was too high, she would cautiously place the piece back on the table. Her questions were all valid and quite interesting.
I watched her in amazement and could feel the tears well up. I wiped them away quickly and smiled when Mom turned around and asked me what I thought of this piece or this piece ? Should she get it ? Are we going to any more sales ? Can we go to lunch also, and get something to eat ? YES YES and YES I told her ! She was so overjoyed. I enveloped her enthusiasm and joy.
YES we are going to more sales ! It was that kind of day.
But, I know she will be with me in spirit as I commence with my garage/yard sales shortly.
How I miss those weekend sales and the precious time I had with Mom. Best caregiving days ever……
